A Badger Bedtime Story: The Bakery Beneath the Floorboards
Written by the team behind Day2Tale. Our editorial approach
Read this original badger bedtime story: Bess opens an underground bakery, but the neighbors upstairs keep mistaking its sounds for something else. The full story comes with one optional way to add a detail from your child’s imagination.
The Bakery Beneath the Floorboards
Bess the badger baked beneath the old meeting hall. Her kitchen had a brick oven, a flour cupboard and a ceiling crossed by thick wooden beams. Above the beams, the neighbors held their evening clubs.
On Monday Bess kneaded dough while the knitting circle met upstairs. Thump, fold, thump. The knitters paused. "Is someone at the door?" asked Rabbit.
On Tuesday she slid trays into the oven while the chess club considered a difficult move. Scrape, clatter, click. Mole looked beneath the table. "Has anyone dropped a piece?"
By Wednesday, Bess heard footsteps coming down her stairs. Rabbit and Mole stood in the doorway, looking puzzled. Behind Bess, six little loaves rose in their tins.
"So it was you," said Rabbit.
"Probably," said Bess. "What was me?"
They explained the thumping and scraping. Bess wiped her paws on her apron. She had chosen the underground kitchen because it was warm and spacious. She had not realized every sound traveled through the beams.
"I could knead earlier," she suggested.
"I could stop imagining visitors," said Rabbit.
Mole inspected the loaves. "Could the mysterious noises come with something to eat?"
Bess laughed. She was planning to sell bread at the morning market, but she usually made a little extra. Together they carried an old cooling rack to the landing between the bakery and the hall.
They agreed on a signal. Two light knocks on the stair rail meant something was ready. One knock from upstairs meant someone was coming to fetch it. Rabbit wrote the arrangement on a card and pinned it beside the hall door.
That evening Bess baked small buns while the drawing club worked above her. The mixing bowl scraped across the table. A tray rattled. Nobody came down to investigate.
When the buns had cooled, Bess placed them on the landing rack and knocked twice. A single knock answered. Soon a hedgehog appeared with a plate and a drawing of Bess's oven, imagined entirely from its noises.
The drawing had seventeen chimneys. Bess hung it above the flour cupboard.
Later, as she washed the last tin, she heard chairs sliding across the hall floor. The club was finishing. She knew that sound now. A moment afterward came one soft knock and an empty plate, with a thank-you note tucked underneath.
Choose one familiar detail
Invite your child to choose the bakery's evening treat. Keep the knock pattern simple enough to repeat comfortably if they want to join in. You can tap twice on a cushion when Bess answers, or read without sound effects. For another telling, change the upstairs visitor while leaving the cooling rack and the shared doorway in place.
