A Cat Bedtime Story: The Chair Nobody Chose
Written by the team behind Day2Tale. Our editorial approach
This short cat bedtime story follows Mabel, a shop cat who thinks the oldest chair deserves a visitor. Read it as written, or let your child choose the color of the chair before you begin.
The Chair Nobody Chose
Every chair in the secondhand shop had been sat upon that morning. A tall man tried the small chair. A small woman tried the tall chair. Two sisters squeezed onto the piano stool and laughed when their knees met.
Only the green chair by the window remained empty. Its paint was worn from years of elbows. One arm was smooth and the other had a little dent shaped like a bean.
Mabel the shop cat inspected it. She inspected the red velvet chair, too, and the shiny wooden bench. Then she climbed onto the counter beside Mr. Moss.
“The green one is a perfectly good chair,” she told him.
Mr. Moss heard a meow. “Yes, supper soon,” he said.
Mabel tried making the chair noticeable. She draped her striped tail over its arm. She sat very straight on its seat. When nobody looked, she lay upside down with one paw in the air.
A child stopped at the window. Mabel held her pose. The child waved, and the grown-up beside her waved, too. Then they hurried on beneath a yellow umbrella.
Rain began tapping the glass. Mr. Moss brought in the sign from the pavement. “Quiet afternoon,” he said, pulling his own chair toward the counter. But a box of cups stood in its way, and his chair would not fit.
Mabel jumped down. She walked to the green chair and looked back. Mr. Moss followed her eyes.
“Well,” he said. He moved the green chair closer to the window and sat down. His elbows found the smooth arms. He could see the whole street from there.
Mabel climbed onto his lap, turned twice, and made herself into a small striped circle.
“I was going to sell this one,” said Mr. Moss. “Perhaps I’ll keep it.”
The rain wrote silver lines on the window. Nobody came into the shop for a while. The chair held Mr. Moss, Mr. Moss held Mabel, and Mabel stopped trying to catch anyone’s attention.
A small way to tell it together
Invite your child to supply Mabel’s meow when she first speaks. After that, an ordinary reading voice is enough. The quiet discovery is that the chair already has a use; there is no lost pet or separation to resolve.
For a shorter telling, leave out the upside-down pose and go straight from the empty chair to the rain. Keep Mr. Moss noticing it and Mabel finding her place on his lap.
Day2Tale is an optional way to turn a moment from your child’s day into a personalized narrated story. A parent sets it up and reviews the result before sharing it. The story above is an original editorial example, not a recording of app output.
