A Firefly Bedtime Story: The Lantern Keeper's Evening Off

Written by the team behind Day2Tale. Our editorial approach

This original firefly bedtime story is ready to read aloud. Fia helps a lantern keeper who cannot find her usual round after the garden paths are rearranged. Below the complete story, you will find a small way to adapt it together.

The Lantern Keeper's Evening Off

Fia the firefly met the lantern keeper beside the fountain. Usually the keeper walked briskly, lighting the garden's little glass lamps as she went. Tonight she stood still with her lantern pole across her shoulder.

"The path used to go left here," she said.

Fia looked. Fresh flower beds curved across the old turning. A new path led right, around a bench that had also moved. The gardeners had finished their work that afternoon, and everything smelled of damp soil.

"Your cottage is still there," Fia said, pointing beyond the hedge.

"Oh, I know my way home. It is my evening round I have lost. If I start at the wrong lamp, I shall walk in circles."

Fia glowed beside the nearest post. "We could choose a new beginning."

The keeper lit that lamp. Its warm circle appeared on the path. She took a small notebook from her pocket and drew a dot. "First."

They followed the new curve past the flower beds. Fia found another lamp behind a tall pot. The keeper lit it and added a second dot. Beyond the bench, two paths divided around a patch of lavender.

The keeper frowned. "This is where I shall confuse myself."

Fia flew down one branch. It ended beside a tool shed with no lamps. She returned. Together they took the other branch, which led to the orchard gate. The keeper drew a tiny shed beside the line in her notebook, then crossed that branch out.

As they continued, the new garden grew easier to understand. The fountain belonged near the start. The orchard gate came after the bench. The last lamp stood beside the keeper's own cottage, where a cup waited upside down on the kitchen sill.

She lit it and closed her notebook. "A shorter round," she said, surprised.

Fia hovered over the gate. "What will you do with the extra time?"

The keeper looked toward the bench. All evening she had been thinking of it as something moved out of place. Now it stood beneath a tree, facing the newly planted flowers.

She made a cup of tea and carried it back along the lit path. Fia settled nearby while the keeper sat down. For the first time that season, they watched the garden from the bench, with every lamp already glowing and no next turning to remember.

One optional idea for reading together

Let your child name one landmark along the new route. Keep the keeper's home visible nearby if getting turned around is a sensitive theme. The lanterns are fantasy garden lights, and the keeper returns home without a frightening search. An optional paper map can use the fountain and the bench as anchors, with your child's chosen landmark between them.
