A Toy Astronaut Bedtime Story: The Planet Behind the Coats
Written by the team behind Day2Tale. Our editorial approach
Read this original toy astronaut bedtime story together. A toy astronaut explores the closet and learns why a new planet keeps changing its weather. The complete story below includes a separate suggestion for adding one familiar detail when you tell it again.
The Planet Behind the Coats
Captain Nola was a toy astronaut with silver boots and a helmet that squeaked when she turned her head. Her spaceship was a slipper. Every evening she launched from the bedroom rug toward a different part of the room.
Tonight a gap beneath the closet door revealed a purple landscape. Nola pushed the slipper closer. Inside, a scarf lay in soft hills beneath the hanging coats. A button shone on the highest fold.
"New planet," she announced into her pretend radio.
She stepped onto the scarf and planted a tiny paper flag. The ground was soft, but the silver boots held firm. Above her hung a dark woolen sky with two enormous pockets.
Nola began a map. First hill. Button crater. Long valley beside the shoe box. Then a breeze moved through the bedroom. The coat overhead swayed, and the scarf's highest fold slid gently downward.
Nola's flag leaned sideways. Her button crater had become a button plain. She crossed out the hill on her map and started again.
A moment later the coat moved back. The scarf lifted where its end had caught on the hem. The hill returned, slightly taller than before.
"Unreliable planet," Nola told her radio.
She tried holding the scarf with a building block. That kept one valley still, but another fold shifted behind her. She moved the block and discovered that her own footsteps had changed the smaller hills too.
From the doorway, a toy rabbit watched. "The fan is on," he said.
Nola looked out. On the dresser, the little room fan turned from side to side. Whenever it faced the closet, the coat moved. Whenever it faced the bed, the planet settled.
Nola put down her pencil. Instead of a fixed map, she drew two pictures: planet with breeze, planet without breeze. She added a small arrow between them. The rabbit thought this explained things nicely.
They removed the building block and sat in the slipper while the scarf hills rose and settled. Nola's flag swayed without falling. After a while she collected it, leaving the purple planet exactly as she had found it.
Back on the rug, she folded the two pictures into her mission book. Under the date she wrote, "A good place to watch the weather." Then she parked the slipper beside the bed.
Adapt one detail for your listener
Choose a name for the closet planet before reading. The astronaut remains a toy in a familiar room, so you can point to that pretend scale if a listener wants reassurance. Keep the moving coat and the fan explanation together. For a second telling, change the scarf's landscape while keeping the astronaut's decision to leave the planet undisturbed.
