A Toy Truck Bedtime Story: The Tunnel With an Echo
Written by the team behind Day2Tale. Our editorial approach
Read this original toy truck bedtime story together. Toby tests a cardboard tunnel and finds that the best delivery is a little sound. The complete story below includes a separate suggestion for adding one familiar detail when you tell it again.
The Tunnel With an Echo
Toby the toy truck carried wooden blocks across the nursery rug. Usually he drove around the book basket, past the bed leg and straight into the block garage. Tonight a cardboard tunnel stood in his path.
It had been made from a cereal box with both ends open. Someone had painted stars on its roof. A paper sign said TUNNEL, which Toby thought was helpful.
He rolled inside with a load of square blocks. His wheels made a louder sound against the cardboard floor. Rumble, rumble. He stopped in the middle.
"Hello?"
In this particular toy room, cardboard tunnels sometimes answered. "Hello," said the tunnel, very softly.
Toby backed out. He looked around the far end. No other truck waited there. He drove in again and tried a small beep. A small beep came back.
At the garage he told the wooden crane. "There is someone in the tunnel. They say everything I say."
"An echo," said the crane. "Try giving it something interesting."
Toby loaded a box of buttons. They rattled all the way to the tunnel, but inside they rattled so much that he could not hear an answer. He returned the buttons and tried a folded cloth. The cloth made no sound at all.
Then he found a little bell that had fallen from a toy shop door. He set it carefully in his cargo bed. As he rolled through the tunnel, the bell gave one clear ring. A fainter ring followed.
Toby stopped. He liked that answer. It sounded as if the tunnel had its own very small shop.
He brought the bell to the wooden crane, who lifted it back onto the shop door. Every delivery now began with a ring. Toby could carry that sound in his memory even when his cargo was quiet.
On his last trip he loaded the square blocks again. The nursery lamp had been turned low. Stars on the tunnel roof showed pale blue in the light.
Toby rolled inside and said, "Good evening."
"Good evening," the tunnel answered.
He continued to the garage, parked neatly beside the crane and lowered his empty cargo bed. Behind him, the cardboard tunnel waited without saying another word. It seemed to know when the day's deliveries were finished.
Adapt one detail for your listener
Your child can choose the truck's cargo or invent a short tunnel sound. Keep voices soft enough for your own reading space. The echo belongs to this toy-room story, so you can simply repeat Toby's greeting once instead of trying to explain acoustics. If your listener wants a shorter telling, skip the first test load and go straight to the bell.
