Leo's Trip to the Bottom of the Sea
One evening, at the very end of a splashy bath, Leo found a tiny glass submarine waiting by his toes. It was just his size, round and warm, with a soft blue light inside.
“All aboard,” said a friendly voice. So Leo climbed in, and the submarine sank down, down, gently down into the quiet sea.
The water grew deep and dark blue, but it was never scary, because everywhere Leo looked, something glowed. Little fish blinked like stars. Jellyfish drifted past like soft, floating lanterns.
A slow old sea turtle paddled up to the window. “Where are you off to, little one?” she asked. “To the very bottom,” said Leo, “to say goodnight to the sea.” The turtle smiled. “Then I'll drift along with you.”
Down they went, past a garden of swaying coral where seahorses curled their tails around the stems and closed their eyes. “Goodnight, seahorses,” whispered Leo. The coral glowed a little softer.
At the very bottom, the sand was pale and smooth, like a bed freshly made. A giant, gentle whale rested there, breathing slow. Whoosh in. Whoosh out. The whole sea seemed to breathe along with him.
Leo breathed too. Whoosh in. Whoosh out. His eyelids felt heavy and warm.
“Time to head home,” said the turtle softly. The little submarine floated up, up, gentle as a bubble, and Leo felt himself rising toward his own cozy bed.
When he blinked, he was tucked under his blanket, still breathing slow with the whale. Whoosh in. Whoosh out.
Goodnight, Leo. Goodnight, deep blue sea.
