A Dog Bedtime Story: The Quiet Parade
Written by the team behind Day2Tale. Our editorial approach
This original dog bedtime story begins after a village parade has finished. A puppy finds another use for the decorations, without a chase, a lost owner or a rescue.
The Quiet Parade
The village parade was over. The drums had gone home in a van. The flags had been rolled up, and the square smelled faintly of rain and warm pretzels.
Otto the dog had watched from the bakery step. He had liked the red cart best. It carried flowers, three children and a paper sun on a stick.
Now the red cart stood empty beside the hall. A yellow paper streamer lay beneath it.
Otto picked up the streamer and trotted to the baker. “Another parade?” the baker asked. “I think everyone is tired.”
Otto wagged once. He did not need everyone.
He placed the streamer on the little handcart the baker used for flour. The baker tucked one end beneath its handle so it would not blow away.
“We have three rolls left,” she said. “And Mrs. Reed missed the parade while she waited for the plumber. We could take her one.”
So the baker put the rolls in a basket. Otto walked beside the cart, and the yellow streamer fluttered without a sound.
They stopped at Mrs. Reed’s door. She came out wearing slippers with blue flowers on them.
“A parade at my house!” she said. She accepted a roll and tucked a sprig of rosemary beside the streamer.
At the next house, Mr. Lin was putting away his ladder. He took a roll and added a folded paper bird. At the last house, the gardener took the final roll and gave Otto a drink of water in a clean bowl.
Nobody marched in a straight line. Nobody had a drum. The cart grew lighter with each visit, but its handle grew more decorated.
Back at the bakery, the baker leaned the paper bird against a jar. She put the rosemary in water. The yellow streamer went on a hook for another day.
Otto settled on his blanket beneath the counter. Outside, the street was empty again.
“That was a very small parade,” said the baker.
Otto closed one eye, then the other. It had reached everyone it needed to reach.
A detail your child can choose
Before reading, choose a color for the paper streamer. If your child wants a noisy parade, you can acknowledge that idea and keep this telling about the quieter journey after it.
Try saying the final sentence slowly, without adding another visitor. Otto has finished his walk, and the cart has finished its deliveries.
Day2Tale is an optional way to turn a moment from your child’s day into a personalized narrated story. A parent sets it up and reviews the result before sharing it. The story above is an original editorial example, not a recording of app output.
Questions parents ask
Does the puppy get lost?
No. Otto walks with the baker and returns to his familiar blanket in the bakery.
