A Rabbit Bedtime Story: The Second Carrot

Written by the team behind Day2Tale. Our editorial approach

Read this gentle rabbit story when you want a small mystery with a clear answer. The surprise is a neighbor’s kindness, and everyone ends the evening at home.

The Second Carrot

Juniper pulled two carrots from her garden. One was straight. The other bent at the end as though it were trying to point somewhere.

She washed them at the outdoor tap and put them on a plate. Then she brought two chairs to her kitchen table.

“Who is coming?” asked her brother, Kit.

“I don’t know yet,” said Juniper. “But I have two carrots.”

Kit was going to supper with their aunt. He gave the pointing carrot a thoughtful look. “Perhaps it knows.”

After he left, Juniper noticed a folded note beneath her door. THANK YOU FOR THE SHADE, it said. There was no name.

Juniper looked at her garden. Her bean plants climbed a wooden frame beside the path. Their leaves made a small cool patch underneath.

Had a bird rested there? She looked up at the hedge. A sparrow was busy settling three untidy feathers and had no idea about the note.

Had a snail passed through? A snail on the gatepost said he had been asleep all afternoon.

Then Juniper spotted two tiny footprints in the soft earth under the beans. Beside them lay the smallest handkerchief she had ever seen.

She carried it to the wall. “Has anyone lost something?” she asked.

A field mouse peeped through a gap. “My picnic cloth! I stopped under your leaves on the way home. I hope that was all right.”

“Of course,” said Juniper. “Would you like to come back for supper?”

The mouse looked at the two chairs. “I may need a cushion.”

Juniper folded a tea towel for him. She cut the carrots into pieces and placed them in a bowl between them. The pointing end went on the top, pointing at nobody in particular.

They ate while the sky beyond the window changed from blue to gray. When the mouse went home, he took his picnic cloth and promised to wave next time he passed the bean patch.

Juniper washed two plates. She pushed both chairs beneath the table. Tomorrow she might pull one carrot or three. Tonight, two had been exactly the right number.

Read the mystery without making it worrying

The note is friendly from the start. You can emphasize that Juniper is curious, not frightened. Let your child guess the visitor once before the footprints appear, or simply keep reading.

For a shorter version, leave out the sparrow and snail. The note, footprints and returned handkerchief still make a complete sequence.

Day2Tale is an optional way to turn a moment from your child’s day into a personalized narrated story. A parent sets it up and reviews the result before sharing it. The story above is an original editorial example, not a recording of app output.

Questions parents ask

Can I shorten this rabbit story?

Yes. Move from the thank-you note directly to the tiny footprints, then keep the invitation and supper ending.
